Dr. Gulnisa Nazarova is a native speaker of Uyghur. Her parents left the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in 1959 for Kyrgyzstan, where Gulnisa was born in 1966. The family moved to Uzbekistan in 1970, and Gulnisa graduated from high school in the Tashkent Region in 1982.
In 1987, she defended her thesis on comparative Russian and Uyghur syntax in the Philology Department at Ivanovo State University in Russia. In 1992, she defended her doctoral dissertation on Uyghur lexicology at the Institute of Uyghur Studies in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and in 1993 she earned her Ph.D. in Philological Sciences from the Kazakh Institute of Linguistics, also in Almaty.
From 1994 to 2005, Dr. Nazarova worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Turkology Department at the Institute of Oriental Studies in Tashkent, where she taught Uyghur, Comparative Lexicology of Turkic Languages, Theoretical Grammar of Turkic Languages, Lexicology of Turkish, Introduction to Linguistics, and Methods for Teaching Turkic Languages.
In 2005, she first came to Indiana University to teach Intermediate Uyghur at the Summer Workshop in Slavic and East European Languages (SWSEEL, now called the Summer Language Workshop) and was subsequently invited to join the faculty at IU's Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS). She regularly teaches four levels of Uyghur during the academic year, as well as the Intensive Uyghur course for IU’s Summer Language Workshop.
As a CEUS faculty member, Dr. Nazarova has collaborated closely with CeLCAR as a Uyghur Language Developer, creating a wide range of language learning materials, including online reading and listening comprehension exercises and multimedia resources for Uyghur learners. In the fall of 2020, she accepted the position of Director of CeLCAR. Since then, she has made it her mission to advance CeLCAR’s goal of creating high-quality teaching materials to promote the teaching and learning of the languages and cultures of Central Asia.
