The Indiana University Summer Language Workshop and IU’s Center for Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR) are pleased to announce the addition of an online Pashto language course to the Workshop’s 2017 program. The intensive Introductory Pashto course will be held June 5 – July 28, 2017, and provide students the equivalent of one year of academic instruction in the program and 6-8 IU credits, which can be transferred to other institutions. All participants will pay in-state tuition rates.
The innovative new course will allow students to learn Pashto without having to be on the Bloomington campus. Graduate students, undergraduates, and professionals from the United States and abroad are welcome to participate. This proficiency-based curriculum will build students’ competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills using materials developed by CeLCAR. Available through the Summer Language Workshop and Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS) at the School of Global and International Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, the online class will feature the same instructional quality as the Summer Language Workshop’s traditional program.
Dr. Rahman Arman will teach this course from online materials that he has designed in conjunction with CeLCAR’s online course specialists. Dr. Arman is a renowned instructor of Afghan languages and cultures at organizations and universities across the nation, certified oral proficiency interview (OPI) tester for Pashto and Dari, and author of Dari: An Introductory Textbook, published by Georgetown University Press, and its companion volume, Dari: An Intermediate Textbook, to be published this spring by the same press. Dr. Arman has employed technology products to create online activities, putting to work revolutionary tools available through Sukhrob Karimov, the Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Specialist at CeLCAR. Amber Kent, CeLCAR’s Instructional Design Specialist worked closely with Dr. Arman to develop online course materials that are both effective and easy to understand. Assistant Director Dave Baer supervised the online team over the course of three years, and Öner Özçelik, CeLCAR Director, managed and guided the project.
